Businesses and brands go to different measures in order to improve the customer shopping experience. In addition to improving business and services, they take notice of the smaller details as well. Take packaging as an example; industries have started to invest more and more in the packaging in the last few years. This interest in improving packaging is associated with the increasing customer expectations from brands and higher definition of quality for customers. In an attempt to meet these expectations, products are polished from inside and outside.

There are hundreds of trends that shape the packaging market, however, we want to discuss a simpler one in this blog, embossing and debossing. Let us know more about these designing processes:

Embossing:

It is a process in the designing of your product packaging that raises your logo and/or any artwork, associated with your brand that you want to make prominent, from the levelled surface of your product packaging. This slight elevation of the packaging skin can be fonts, logos, or any artwork as well. The purpose is to make sure the important elements of your packaging are highlighted and brought attention to.

The Process:

To start the embossing process, a metallic plate called a die is made that has the intended embossing design raised on its surface. This plate is used to press the product below to create the imprint. The process is repeated over and over. The metallic body of the dies makes them very enduring; they can be used in large and small scale processes alike.

Debossing:

Debossing is a phenomenon quite opposite to embossing. While embossing raises the surface of the packaging debossing gives shapes, designs, and fonts a sunken look. It prints the given artwork in the shape of a dent on the packaging surface.

There are different factors that are involved in the decision of either using embossing or debossing in your packaging design.

The Process:

Contrary to the embossing process, debossing presses the product downward from above, instead of below, to create the dent. While not as popular as its counterpart, debossing still has its own perks and beauty.

Things to Remember When Embossing or Debossing:

From the type of material to the design, text, or logo size that you want to print, there are factors that need to be taken into consideration before choosing either one of the options. Although in some cases the designing process will be the same, for the most part, the decision will be dependant on the aforementioned factors.

Choose a Design Area to Emboss:

Although you can choose to emboss your entire logo or design, the process and results work better when only a part of it is embossed. For instance, if you have a logo with text beneath it, embossing both of them might result in the interruption of one with the other.

You Can Add Finishing Options:

Different layers of finishes can be added to the embossed or debossed packaging to give it an extra layer of rising or dent. The purpose of adding these finishes is to make the prints more prominent.

While both the options sound appealing to any retailer, it is best to choose from the two options based on the recommendation by your packaging supplier since they are familiar with the performance of the processes on different surfaces.
